Under the Lights: Being a Woman, Trans or Non-Binary Person in Dance Music

This two part documentary dives into dance music’s deep rooted problem with sexism and gender disparity, told by the voices of DJs and producers from a grassroots level to the very top of the industry.

It shines a light on the problems faced by women, and offers tangible solutions.

Themes include representation, safety, trans rights and sexism.

The first episode includes a discussion around safety issues for women working in music, with accounts from two DJs (DJ PRIYA & G33 from Girls Don’t Sync) who have experienced a physical assault and a sexual assault in their place of work.

In the second episode, Annie Mac and salute offer some suggestions for changes that need to be made, The Blessed Madonna opens up about their gender identity and TAAHLIAH shares her experience as a trans woman.

Jaguar also sits down with Michelle Manetti, who runs one of East London’s most popular queer nights and Lau.ra, who has been navigating the industry as a mother.

Jaguar’s wisdom, her thoughtful interview style and her determination for change is highlighted beautifully across these two episodes.

As the producer, Katie was responsible for writing, editing, researching, recording and sound designing the documentary.

The documentary was covered by The Guardian, CRACK Magazine, Mixmag, DUMMY, Resident Advisor and more.
